ìThe Hoboes are coming... The Hoboes are coming.î Atchison is a historic railroad town as it was here that the famous Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe was born, and over the years Atchison has developed an interesting relationship with hobos (hoboes.) Quite a large number of hobos came through Atchison back in 1924. About 85 of these nomadic workers were riding a freight train from the North when it derailed rounding a curve approaching Atchison and several of them were killed. There was a large Hobo Jungle here, with makeshift quarters for these wanders to camp beside the tracks. Americaís most fabled if not famous Hobo, ìSteamtrainî Maury Graham, was born and raised here. The 5 - time ìKing of Hoboesî was a natural for hoboeing. His uncle, Briton Craft, was an engineer for a railroad running west out of Atchison. Craftís heroic act of saving his passengers lives while sacrificing his own is celebrated annually at the Atchison Hobo Days Celebration ever since the records of the feat were rediscovered and his life memorialized in song by Country music artist Liberty Justice back in 1997.

Graham, now in his 80ís, has been in Atchison every year since to lead the Hobo Graveside Services at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Atchison. Health permitting, we hope he can be with us again this year.
Atchison Hobo Days is more than just a place for old and young hobos to gather, it is a place for them to share with others (families) their lifestyles, ideals and heritage. A Hobo Jungle (camp) will feature free Hobo Stew for visitors and activities and Hobo Crafters. Music will feature members of the National Grand Hobo Band, including Liberty Justice, Sawbones, Grandpa Dudley and National Hobo Troubadour ìMr. Bojangles.î Other Hobos who will be here include 2002 Hobo Queen "Derail," 2002 Hobo King "Grandpa," former Kings Liberty Justice and Preacher Steve, and hobos with names like "Redbird Express" and "Milwaukee Mike."
